When Monster Energy called upon EKKO Media to develop their main brand website, we were thrilled to implement our expertise by delivering a custom-tailored solution. The new site leverages many new code platforms that ultimately placed it at the forefront of emerging technologies. The site features an adaptive design that scales and flows as needed on a full range of devices from desktop to smaller mobile devices.The site also features user accounts through the deployment of the EKKO DNA platform that sorts the users interests and site-interactions to customize the delivered content specific to each user. All of the front-end content is managed by a global CMS that allows admins around the world to post content and share global content with other countries on the MonsterEnergy.com website.

Monster Energy has an incredible brand following that has been built off brand integration in all aspects of aggressive sports, music and celebrities. With this tight connection, the brand has exploded as the leading energy drink in the US with global sales moving at a similar pace. Monster Energy’s goal for the site is to give its users unique and interesting content from all segments of it’s marketing business and do it with high impact visuals that draw their site visitors in.
Defining the User Interface
Taking into account all the industries Monster Energy is targeting, the team at EKKO Media was up to the task of creating an interface that allows the users to experience all Monster has to offer, from motocross, street and offroad to the other spectrum of surf, skate and music.
Intermixed in that content is promotions and the main site focus, the Monster product itself. The site needed to be adaptive, taking advantage of the most current device capabilities as well as retaining as much functionality as possible for legacy devices.
Platform and Development Frameworks
We knew from the outset that given the required functionality, the depth and breadth of user interactions, and the need for the client to manage day to day maintenance in-house, this was going to require something far beyond off the shelf solutions.
The site is powered by a custom built CMS that closely ties the Monster Media system with the site and allows the global admins to create and push content to all different variations of the Monster country sites. The Front-End, CMS and Data Feeds are running on the Amazon Web Service (AWS) architecture with deployments in multiple data centers for improved performance and redundancy. The content is delivered over the expansive Akamai Content Delivery Network (CDN) so that all users globally have reduced latency and the best experience possible.
The Monster Energy website required many feature updates and core changes that didnt exist on the previous site. The addition of user registration, interest-tracking, social platform integration, polls & quizzes, as well as scavenger hunts, are just some of the many features found on this new site build.
The EKKO team worked tirelessly to bring Monster’s vision to life and to meet their goals. The end result was a highly visual site that closely intertwined the vast landscape of the Monster Energy life and brand. This adaptive and quick loading site allows the Monster fan base to quickly click through all that Monster has to offer.
From Desktop to Mobile, and Everything In-Between
With the ever-changing device landscape and changes with respect to how consumers ingest websites these days, it's more important than ever for a website to be able to adapt to all platforms. The adaptive design of the site maintains consistency of the elements across platforms and scales to the device. Mouse-click interactions adapt to touch and allow the user to click, tap, or swipe as needed depending on the user's platform of choice.
The goal for the Monster Energy site accomplishes this using an adaptive layout that allows the users regardless of what device they’re on to have a unified experience that not only pushes the boundries of whats capable but does it in a way that still delivers fast load times regardless of connection speed.
Core Functionality and Features
The Monster Energy site features a broad range of functionality and features which include a full Monster Members area that allows visitors to sign-up and gain access to some amazing Monster Energy perks.
In addition to the members area is something we call "Monster DNA". This function tracks each user's interests. As the users interact with the site, their habits are stored and used to refine the content they see based on their interactions. We highlight just a few examples below.
Identify The Users
For the first time, Monster has included User accounts as part of the Monster Energy website platform. The users are guided through a simple, step by step process to create an account.
Defining The User's Interests
Monster Energy has a wide range of content. By allowing the user's to define their interests, the Monster Energy site delivers content specific to the users defined interests.
A Global Footprint
The Monster Energy brand reaches to all corners of the world. Because of this, the site needs to not only allow the user to select their country of interest, but it must also detect the user's IP address and automatically direct them to their country.
Customer engagement was the key to the success of this project. The addition of user accounts, the EKKO DNA platform, and the adaptive design all helped to fulfill all the client’s requirements. The final validation came from the impressive spike in web traffic, time on-page data and user interactions. The site went on to receive several design awards.
